The 45 largest merchant acquirers in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C) region based on card payments processed in 2020 are ranked on page 5. This group processed a combined 25.36 billion Mastercard and Visa transactions, up 0.8% 2019. Transactions occurred at 16.1 million active merchant outlets in the region.
Mastercard and Visa purchase volume (spending for goods and services) at the top 45 acquirers was $650.19 billion, a decrease of 10.6%.
LA&C’s eight largest acquirers—Cielo, Rede, Getnet, BBVA, Transbank, StoneCo, PagSeguro and Prisma Medios de Pago—each handled more than 1.00 billion transactions.
Those 8 collectively accounted for 78% of all Mastercard and Visa transactions acquired by the top 45. Of the 8 largest acquirers, 5 are based in Brazil. Among the top 45, acquirers with the best year-over-year growth were Klap, Izipay, StoneCo and Niubiz.
The top acquirers also processed American Express, Diners Club and Discover card transactions in addition to domestic-only credit and debit cards issued in Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Curacao, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Puerto Rico. Those transactions combined were 3.32 billion, up 3.8% over 2019.
The domestic-only card brands included Elo, Hipercard, Banricompras, Cardnet, Redcompra, Clave, Credomatic, Cashnet, ATH, Midas, Cabal and Credito Facil Codensa.
Purchase volume for American Express, Diners, Discover and domestic-only cards was $82.01 billion, which was up 5.5%. For domestic-only cards, volume of $28.21 billion grew 26.2%.
At the top 45 acquirers, global brand and domestic-only cards combined generated 28.68 billion credit, debit and prepaid card purchase transactions, an increase of 1.1%. Combined purchase volume of $732.19 billion declined 6.5%.
